Of course no one expected to see "stars" on the first appearance of the members, but were generally agreeably surprised by the ability and talent displayed. Some, perhaps all, were open to criticism, but many of these defects will disappear with more practice. | 107 | 1876 March 23; Clarksville Star; Clarksville, Iowa Meeting of the School Board CLARKSVILLE, March 20, 1876 Regular meeting of the Board. Members present--Pres, John Palmer, Butler, Burton and Logan. C.G. Schellenger and G.P. Babcock, members elect appeared and qualified, and took their seats. The Board then proceeded to the election of President for the ensuing year. On motion John Palmer was unanimously elected as President. Burton moved that we have nine months of school, of three months each. After considerable discussion the motion was withdrawn. Butler moved that we have eight months school, divided as follows: Spring term, 10 weeks; fall term 10 weeks; winter 12 weeks. Motion prevailed. On motion it was resolved to commence school on the 17th of April. Board adjourned to meet on Friday evening, March 24th. John Palmer | ||

J. O. Stewart was chosen chairman and J.P. Reed Secretary. On motion, a committee of three were appointed to select the delegates, which resulted in the choice of the following persons: John Palmer, J.R. Jones, G.P. Babcock, T.G. Copeland, W.E. Burton, L.F. Champlain, Ren. Bartlett, Wm. Moore, J.O. Stewart, Dan. McDonald, John Hickle. On motion, the delegates were instructed to cast a full vote for Butler Township. J.O. Stewart, Pres. J.P. | 116 | 1876 September 17; Clarksville Star; Clarksville, Iowa INDIAN RELICS-- A few weeks ago Mr. W. E. Burton picked up a stone ax, on the road near J.R. Jones' house that will weigh about four pounds. The ax is of very hard stone, and near the pole, is a groove, where the handle evidently was attached. The edge or bit, is worked down so that it is sharp enough to split wood. It is no doubt the work of the aboriginies, that formerly inhabited the country. ___________________________________________ THANKS.-- Burt. Mr. Burton is classed among our very best business men and citizens. Is known to be active, energetic and reliable in all his conduct and dealings with his fellow men. By nature and by business education and experience he is well qualified for the office of sheriff, and there is no man now in the field his superior, although they may be his equal, for that responsible position, and should he be chosen, there will be no retrograding in the efficiency of our officers. | ||

Crowell, who lives on the west side, obtained possession of a paper containing strychnine, and before the parents were aware of the fact, swallowed a portion of it.
