INDIAN RELICS-- A few weeks ago Mr. W. E. Burton picked up a stone ax, on the road near J.R. Jones' house that will weigh about four pounds. The ax is of very hard stone, and near the pole, is a groove, where the handle evidently was attached. The edge or bit, is worked down so that it is sharp enough to split wood. It is no doubt the work of the aboriginies, that formerly inhabited the country.

LOOKS WELL.--W.H. Moore, W.E. Burton and Jerry Perrin have each mowed the weeks and grass in the public highway opposite their lands east of town. It adds one hundred per cent. to the looks of the country. If all would do this, it would not only add to the beauty of the country, but be of great advantage to the farmer, in preventing the noxious weeds from ripening and seeding down the adjacent farms.

    DIED.--Martha A. Burton died May 6, 1895, aged 69 years, 7 months, 3 days.
She was born Oct. 2, 1826, at Charlesville, VA. On June 3, 1841, she was married to William E. Burton, in Rockville, Ind. He died Jan. 1, 1884. They came west and settled in Butler county in 1853. This has practically been her home ever since living on their homestead east of Clarksville. Her husband was Butler county's first assessor and its first county clerk. She has been an invalid for thirty years and a great sufferer. The immediate cause of her death was heart failure, and it occured at the home of her only child, Mrs. R.E. Witt, with whom she has lived for many years.
Over fifty years ago Mrs. Burton became a member of the Christian church and ever remained true to her faith.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Platt at the Christian church. Those more intimately acquainted with the deceased speak flattering words in behalf of her.

    History Continued

Where stands in majesty the school house, near there, the spike was driven in 1853, which indicated "the future great." During the same year mentioned, the land for a town was surveyed, and prosperity showed its silver wings. The first justice of the peace was Seth Hilton, Sr., whose judgment and discrimination were little called to action, owing to the peaceful and harmonious action of the people. The pioneers had no time to dream.--Good healthy action was required and tired limbs caused sound repose. The mornings brought each a new story of happy thoughts realized, and energy and enterprise became manifest in the erection of new buildings--the appearance of new settlers, and ever ready helping hand of the neighbor.

In 1855-56 a mill with two run of buhrs was constructed by Strong, Eichar & Dowaldson, and ought to be recognized as the first public improvement. Imagine the chest expansion of the pioneer at this new glory. No more tramping with a weary load to and from Cedar Falls, and doubtless he looked blandly on his "bonnie wee bairns" when he thought of the good times coming for them.

Amid the numerous families resident or located near at that time were the following, which go down to posterity as possessing true heroism: C.N. Burton, John Henry, John Armstrong, W.E. Burton, O. A. Strong, Daniel Mather, A. Van Dorn, William Brandom, Ab Farlow, John Palmer, I.M. vincent, Robert Handly, John Morton, W.D. Hilton, and many others.

As time went apace Clarksville grew in numbers, and in happiness, but the dark speck of future storm became more apparent on the horizon. The mere rumors turned to facts, and the financial distress which threw the commercial marts into disquietude, fear, terror and dispair made itself felt upon the then thriving and happy people, , and in 1857 the anvil quit its ringing, and the mill buhrs lay in somnolent quietude. The town was for the time being "dead."
